BALMAIN’S OLIVIER ROUSTEING DESIGNING FOR PARIS OPERA
Olivier Rousteing is famed for dressing some of the most famous names in the industry; with Beyoncé, Kim Kardashian West, Bella & Gigi Hadid and Rihanna as just some of he’s regulars. But Balmain’s creative director Olivier Rousteing is taking on a different kind of collaboration, bringing his famed aesthetic to one of the most affluent Paris traditions: the Paris Opera.
Rousteing has been recruited to design the costumes for the upcoming ballet “Renaissance,” by dancer and choreographer Sébastien Bertaud. “My ambition is to create a classical ballet for today, so the idea was to be able to continue mining that DNA while looking to the future,” Bertaud explained about his choice of designer. “For me, Olivier was the only person today who shares the same approach of innovating while respecting traditional techniques,” Bertaud told WWD.
Rousteing himself has been a long-time fan of classical ballet, and appreciates the importance of clothing designs for the esteemed opera. “This project really represents French heritage,” Rousteing told WWD. “Obviously I love the world of pop, but for me, it all goes back to classical dance. I’ve been fascinated with it since I was a child…With the world of the Opera, we are opening up a new sector and a new era for Balmain. It’s a really nice validation of my style and a way of showing you can remain international even while being very Parisian.”
“Reinassance” will make its debut this coming June, and we cannot wait to see these seriously chic costumes take centre stage.
