Abu Dhabi Is Becoming the New Capital
This November, Abu Dhabi will welcome a new kind of luxury gathering — one that places collectors, craftsmanship and culture at the centre of the conversation. From November 20 to 22, the UAE capital will host The Escapement, the world’s first collector-led global horology platform, marking a major shift in how fine watchmaking is experienced and understood.
Created by lifelong watch enthusiasts, The Escapement moves away from the traditional trade fair model that has long defined the industry. Instead of focusing solely on launches and transactions, the platform is designed as an immersive cultural experience where storytelling, artistry and human connection take precedence. In many ways, it reflects the changing landscape of modern luxury itself, one increasingly shaped by meaning, community and emotional value rather than exclusivity alone.
Set against the backdrop of Abu Dhabi’s rapidly evolving cultural scene, the three-day event will bring together some of the world’s most respected maisons, independent watchmakers, collectors and creative voices. The inaugural edition is expected to feature names including Greubel Forsey, Louis Vuitton, Rexhep Rexhepi, Chopard, Biver and Romain Gauthier, a carefully curated mix of heritage houses and boundary-pushing independents shaping the future of contemporary horology.
But beyond the watches themselves, The Escapement is ultimately about the people who give horology its soul: the collectors. Long influential in defining the meaning, rarity and cultural significance of watchmaking, collectors have historically remained on the sidelines of how the industry presents itself. The Escapement changes that dynamic entirely by building the experience through their perspective.
“Collectors have always been the people who give horology its meaning,” says co-founder Anish Bhatt. “The Escapement was created to build a platform where watches are understood as stories, craft and culture.”
That philosophy reflects a broader shift happening within luxury today. Increasingly, watches are no longer viewed purely as status symbols or technical instruments, but as cultural artefacts tied to identity, heritage, design and emotion. Independent makers are rising in influence, collectors are becoming tastemakers, and communities are forming around shared appreciation for craftsmanship and innovation.
For Abu Dhabi, hosting The Escapement further reinforces the emirate’s growing position as a global destination for culture, design and high luxury. As the city continues investing in museums, architecture, fashion, art and creative industries, the arrival of a platform like The Escapement feels less like a standalone event and more like part of a larger cultural evolution taking shape across the capital.
With venue details and ticketing expected to be announced in June, anticipation around the event is already building internationally. And if its vision succeeds, The Escapement may not only redefine watch fairs,. it could redefine how the world engages with horology altogether.
