Dubai’s Tunnel Art Era

The city is transforming more than 40 tunnels into immersive public art spaces — redefining how Dubai moves, feels and experiences creativity.

Dubai has always treated infrastructure differently.

In a city shaped by ambition, design and constant reinvention, even the spaces people move through every day are beginning to evolve into something more experiential. Now, that transformation is moving underground.

Through a new initiative launched by Dubai Culture and the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), more than 40 tunnels across Dubai are set to become large-scale public art spaces designed by Emirati and UAE-based creatives.

From Infrastructure to Immersive Experience

What was once purely functional is now becoming cultural.

The initiative aims to transform tunnels from transitional spaces into immersive visual environments that reflect Dubai’s identity, diversity and creative energy. Rather than simply decorating roads, the project reimagines how art can exist within the everyday rhythm of city life.

Commuting through Dubai may soon feel less like movement and more like experience.

A City Designed Beyond the Surface

The project forms part of the wider Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan, which focuses on building a more people-centric, visually engaging and culturally connected city.

It also reflects Dubai’s growing shift toward integrating creativity directly into public life — allowing art to exist outside traditional galleries and become accessible to everyone moving through the city.

In many ways, it signals a new era for Dubai’s urban identity:
one where infrastructure, culture and emotion intersect seamlessly.

The Open Call for Creatives

Dubai Culture has officially invited Emirati artists, designers, architects and UAE-based creatives to submit original proposals for the initiative.

The selected works are expected to reflect Dubai’s cultural diversity while remaining visually balanced and suitable for tunnel environments. Artists are encouraged to create contemporary concepts that feel innovative, immersive and deeply connected to the city itself.

More Than Public Art

What makes the initiative particularly compelling is not only its scale, but its intention.

Dubai is no longer designing solely for efficiency or spectacle. Increasingly, the city is creating spaces designed to evoke feeling, memory and human connection.

And soon, even the drive home may become part of the experience. ✨
