Michael Kors Partners with WFP to Tackle Global Hunger: A New Chapter in the Watch Hunger Stop Initiative

New York, October 16, 2024 — Michael Kors has announced an exciting evolution in its philanthropic efforts to combat hunger through its global initiative, Watch Hunger Stop. In partnership with the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), the brand is now set to support WFP’s innovative Home-Grown School Feeding program, which aims to provide nutritious meals to children while bolstering local economies and empowering communities.

Since its inception in 2013, Watch Hunger Stop has focused on delivering school meals to children in food-insecure regions, and the initiative has made a remarkable impact—providing over 35 million meals in the past decade. The latest phase of this partnership underscores a commitment to sustainable, community-driven change, particularly in the realm of education and nutrition.

Supporting Local Farmers and Empowering Women

The Home-Grown School Feeding program is designed to foster resilience in local communities by connecting school meal suppliers with local farmers. This approach not only ensures that children receive safe and nutritious meals sourced from their own communities but also creates a reliable income stream for local farmers—many of whom are women. By providing training and resources, the program empowers women and girls to transform their futures, reinforcing the vital role they play in sustainable development.

Sri Lanka has been identified as the first country for this expanded initiative, where Michael Kors and WFP will collaborate to reach an additional 300,000 children with regular school meals. Additionally, the partnership aims to support 1,000 farmers by facilitating the supply of eggs, vegetables, and fruits for these meals. Beyond nutrition, this initiative will also enable infrastructure improvements, such as renovating kitchens and classrooms and installing sustainable solar panels in schools.

A Vision for the Future

Designer Michael Kors expressed his enthusiasm for this new chapter, stating, “Home-Grown School Feeding is designed to achieve longer-term, sustainable impact, and it highlights the importance of women and girls in transforming the future. I’ve always believed that the fight against global hunger is one we can win, and as we enter our second decade working with WFP, I’m more encouraged than ever that we are helping to build a better world.”

Cindy McCain, Executive Director of WFP, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of self-sufficiency for vulnerable populations. She stated, “With global hunger at alarmingly high levels, it’s vital we invest in programs that enable the vulnerable people we serve to become more self-sufficient.”
